The first Gothic novel was The Castle of Otranto by Horace Walpole, published in 1764. It was followed by landmark novels from Ann Radcliffe, including The Mysteries of Udolpho and The Italian (who inspired Jane Austen to write her delightfully Gothic send-up genre _Northanger Abbey).
